How to Take A Cheek Swab
When you take a cheek swab for a DNA test you are collecting the skin cells from the inside of your cheek, not your saliva. Use a new cotton swab. Cut off one end of the swab and use the other end to take your sample. Rub the swab against the inside of your cheek moving from front to back for about 20 seconds. Then place the swab directly into a envelope. You do not need to allow the swab to dry. Label the envelope with your name and date of collection. Place this envelope inside the mailing package with your test sample.
Do not touch the cotton end of the swab to anything before you put it in your mouth. Do not allow the cotton end with the sample to touch anything after you’ve taken the sample, for example to do not lay the swab down on the counter or sink before placing into the envelope. Please submit 2-3 swabs for the best chance of a obtaining a complete profile for your DNA test.
How to Package Your Samples
Handle your sample with gloves or a clean paper towel if possible to avoid contamination. Place the sample in a paper envelope or paper bag. Do not use plastic bags. Plastic bags will trap moisture and heat and cause any DNA to break down. If you are sending more than one item for testing, place each one in a separate bag or envelope. You can send them all in the same mailer.
Mark the area you want tested with a marker or safety pin. If the item you want tested is large, like a sheet or large piece of clothing, you can cut out the area containing the stain and send that portion. Do not send an item that is obviously wet. Allow it to air dry thoroughly before packaging.
Please print the Sample Submission Form and send it in with your samples. This lets us know how you want your results sent to you, and the return address if you want your sample back after testing. If you can’t print it, you can write the information on a piece of paper and include it with your items.
Mailing and Payment
Place your samples in a mailer and send to us. When we receive your package we will send you a delivery confirmation email. If you want your sample returned, please indicate this on your sample submission form. There is an additional fee of $40 to return your samples. The online order page will have a place for you to add this to your order. If you are mailing payment, please add the fee to your total. If you are also ordering the semen detection test, make sure and give yourself the $10 credit! You can order through our online services, or send credit card information with your samples using this form.
